

You may have seen headlines about “plug-in solar” coming to UK shops and retailers, cheap panels you plug into a normal wall socket like a kettle. Several websites are already publishing buying guides with specific legal dates and wattage limits. The reality right now is more cautious than that: as things stand, plugging a solar panel into a standard UK socket still isn’t legal, and the government hasn’t yet confirmed exactly when that will change.
Here’s what’s actually been confirmed so far, and what it means whether you’re weighing up a small plug-in device or a full rooftop system.
On 15 March 2026, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband announced the government’s intention to make plug-in solar available in the UK for the first time, as part of a wider package of energy security measures introduced in response to the conflict in the Middle East. This was a statement of intent, not a change in the law.
To follow through on that, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) ran a public consultation between 16 and 30 June 2026 on the specific changes needed: an amendment to the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994, and a new interim product specification that plug-in solar products would have to meet before they could be sold or used.
That consultation has now closed. DESNZ expects to publish a summary of responses by 22 July 2026, after which it intends to move “at pace” on next steps. No firm date for the regulations actually changing has been confirmed yet.
Not legally, no. Under current rules, the standards behind standard UK plugs and sockets (BS 1363) do not allow them to be used to connect electricity-generating equipment, and existing wiring regulations are built around fixed installations rather than plug-in generation devices. Until the proposed changes are formally adopted, plug-in solar microgenerators can’t be legally sold, supplied, or used in the UK connected via a normal socket.
Worth flagging: a number of buying guides online are already stating specific “legal from” dates and exact wattage caps as settled fact. Based on the government’s own consultation documents, those details haven’t been finalised. Treat any guide quoting a confirmed launch date or wattage limit with some caution until DESNZ publishes its formal response.

If you’re a renter or in a flat without roof access, plug-in solar could eventually be a genuinely useful option once it’s legal, small, no-electrician installation, modest but real savings on things like appliances plugged into the same circuit. It’s just not available to legally use yet, and even once it is, the proposals on the table only cover panels in the hundreds-of-watts range, not full battery storage.
If you own your home and have a suitable roof, a professionally installed solar system is a different scale of investment entirely. A typical residential array generates several kilowatts rather than a fraction of one, can be paired with battery storage such as a Tesla Powerwall or GivEnergy system, and is MCS-certified, which plug-in devices currently have no route to. That certification matters because it’s what allows you to receive Smart Export Guarantee payments for electricity you send back to the grid, something the current plug-in proposals do not appear to provide a clear route for.
